NPQ for Headship (NPQH)

Prepare for headship with confidence.  

The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) is designed for current and aspiring headteachers who are ready to take the next step in their leadership journey.  

Delivered in partnership with Ambition Institute, this programme combines evidence-informed leadership development with practical application in your school. 

Who is this programme for?

The NPQH is ideal for: 

 - Deputy headteachers and assistant headteachers 
 - Senior leaders ready to progress to headship 
 - Acting headteachers or those new to the role 

If you are leading across a whole school and preparing for headship, this programme will support you to step into the role with clarity and confidence.  

What you'll gain

By the end of the programme, you will:  

- Develop a clear vision for school improvement 

- Strengthen your ability to lead teaching and learning across a whole school 

- Build confidence in leading staff, culture and change 

- Make evidence-informed decisions that improve people outcomes 

- Apply leadership strategies directly in your own context 

This is not just theory; you'll have the opportunity to apply what you learn throughout the program. 

 

How the programme works

The NPQH it is designed to fit around your role, with flexible, structured learning over time.  

Duration: 18 months 

Delivery includes: 

- Self-paced online modules 

- Facilitated sessions with experienced leaders 

- Opportunities to reflect and apply learning to your current role 

Assessment: 

NPQs are assessed at the end of the programme through a written case study based on what you have learned (1,500 words). Support and guidance will be provided in preparation to this endpoint, and the process is manageable alongside your role in school. 

 

Funding and eligibility

NPQH is fully funded for many schools through Department for Education scholarships.
